UAF strikes gold with Lorna Shaw

The Business Leader of the Year award is given to a deserving recipient based on their leadership in the Fairbanks business community, business achievements, community service, and educational support. On April 18, 2014 the 38th Business Leader of the Year award was given to Lorna Shaw of Sumitomo Metal Mining Pogo.

Prior to joining the mining industry, Lorna served for a number of years as a legislative aide to members of the Alaska State Legislature and as Assistant to the Chief of Staff for US Senator Frank Murkowski.

Lorna graduted cum laude in 1996 with her BBA and summa cum laude in 2005 with her MBA from the UAF School of Management. The UAF Alumni Association awarded Lorna with the 2013 Alumni Achievement Award for Business and Professional Excellence.

Business Leader of the Year

The event held Friday, April 18 sold out for the fifth year in a row. Over 45 UAF School of Management students helped make the night a success. Students volunteered their time in order to earn a ticket the event. They made calls, ironed table runners, and decorated the venue with pink tissue poms.

Photos from the event can be found on Facebook and Flickr.

Invest in Students

Funds raised through the Business Leader of the Year event support student organizations at the UAF School of Management (SOM). At past events there were cake and silent auctions in order to raise additional funds. This year, based on the suggestions of previous Business Leader of the Year recipients and event attendees, SOM tried something new.

Instead of telling how student organizations make a difference in students’ lives, students filmed and directed a short video to show the impact:

Then previous Business Leader of the Year led the charge and gave directly in support of student organizations, inviting attendees to do the same. The audience, made up of the Interior community and business leaders chose to invest in students, raising thousands of dollars – all of which will go back to the future business leaders of Alaska: UAF School of Management students.
